Home Page Social Responsibility Therapy Online Home Page Books & Publications Presentation Calendar Training Contact Us A Social Solutions Initiative The lack of social responsibility exhibited by multiple forms of unhealthy, harmful behavior consistently on display in the news media overloads our healthcare system, tears the moral fabric of our society, threatens our civil rights, overcrowds our jails, jams our human services system, and prevents our young people from achieving their goals in life. Social Responsibility Therapy targets multiple forms of unhealthy, harmful behavior (i.e., sexual, physical, property, substance, and trust abuse) across settings (i.e., treatment, home, school, community) and time (i.e., twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week). The evidence-based practice approach of SRT integrates research validated methods and best practice procedures into a multicultural intervention to help develop a socially responsible lifestyle free of behavior that is harmful to self and others. Social Responsibility Therapy uses a structured discovery approach to In addition, Social Responsibility Therapy addresses: the target behavior problem (i.e., the referral form of abuse is not usually the only form of abuse); the negative social influence problem (i.e., from problem peers, partners, and parents); the dose-response problem (i.e., expanding the agents of change to include significant others at home, school, and the community to provide better coverage of the youth’s behavior during the day); and the intervention intensity problem (i.e., balancing confrontation with concern to preserve the therapeutic relationship without inhibiting behavior change motivation). Social Responsibility Therapy advantages include a toolbox of evidence-based methods and highly structured procedures for: (1) awareness training focused on helping clients with a broad range of harmful behavior understand how they acquired, maintained and generalized their behavior along with its impact on others; (2) responsibility training focused on developing multicultural prosocial values, changing irresponsible thinking, teaching others about the harmful behavior along with offering emotional restitution to those who have been harmed; and (3) tolerance training focused on social perspective taking and respect for diversity along with emotional regulation procedures to help dissipate emotions or accommodate emotions without acting them out. The multicultural prosocial values focus of SRT: preserves unity while respecting cultural diversity; develops the social maturity needed to succeed in a multicultural democratic society; makes it easily adaptable to diverse family settings; and easily integrated into multidenominational faith-based treatment initiatives. The latter is becoming increasingly important given continued limitations of public funding for mental health services.
